The Leadership Award, presented by the University of Newcastle, aims to recognise and encourage emerging leaders in the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid North Coast Regions, and to provide the winner with additional training and support to nuture their leadership skills.

The Award recipient will receive a package of prizes including participation in a mentored leadership program and a $10,000 leadership development scholarship of the winner's choice.

Individuals are nominated for the award through a written submission addressing the Award criteria. A panel of judges, comprised of community leaders from across the region, will identify up to six finalists. All finalists will be interviewed by the judging panel.

Nominees should be:

  • Aged less than 35 years on January 1, 2008
  • Living and working in the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid North Coast regions, New South Wales

Nominees should demonstrate:

  • Leadership - described as including the attributes of vision, the ability to encourage and inspire others, influence and motivate peers, work in a team environment, be a positive role model, achieve success and demonstrate integrity.
  • Initiative - the ability to take charge by creating or developing a program, project or activity that impacts the community and your profession.
  • Creativity - the ability to think ‘outside the square’ and develop or propose creative ways to accomplish goals or objectives, and to generate new resources to address problems.
  • Dedication - going above and beyond the call of duty to achieve the best result.

Nomination Process

  1. Download a copy (109kb) and complete.
  2. In no more than 500 words, prepare a statement of achievements, activities, experiences, etc., relative to the Award criteria. Cite specific examples and honors that would support the selection of the nominee. Additional supporting materials may be provided at the nominator’s discretion as appendices.
  3. Return the completed Nomination Form and supporting material to:

  4. All nominations must be supported and signed by a minimum of two proposers.
