The Leadership Award, presented by the University of Newcastle, aims to recognise and encourage emerging leaders in the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid North Coast regions in order to develop confident leadership for the regions’ future.
The Award recipient will receive a package of prizes including participation in a mentored leadership program and a $10,000 leadership development scholarship nominated by the University of Newcastle.
Candidates may apply through a written submission addressing all the Award criteria. The application must be supported by a referee.
All candidates will be invited to an evening Leadership Networking function.
A panel of judges, comprising community leaders from across the region, will identify the finalists and speak with referees. All finalists will be interviewed by the judging panel.
Nominee criteria:
- Aged less than 35 years on January 1, 2010
- Living and working in the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid North Coast regions, New South Wales
Award criteria:
- In no more than 500 words demonstrate each of the following criteria with respect to their career and community activities. Community leadership can include volunteering, charity work, not for profit organisations, coaching and sporting contributions etc:
Leadership - described as including the attributes of vision, the ability to encourage and inspire others, influence and motivate peers, work in a team environment, be a positive role model, achieve success and demonstrate integrity.
Initiative - the ability to take charge by creating or developing a program, project or activity that impacts the community and your profession.
Creativity - the ability to think ‘outside the square’ and develop or propose creative ways to accomplish goals or objectives, and to generate new resources to address problems.
Dedication - going above and beyond the call of duty to achieve the best result.
Cite specific examples and honours that would support the selection of this nomination. Additional supporting materials may be provided as appendices.

2. Candidates may nominate themselves or be nominated for this award.
3. Complete the Award Criteria Statement (in no more than 500 words) identifying the achievements, activities, experiences, etc., relevant to the criteria: leadership, initiative, creativity, dedication.
4. All nominations must be supported and signed by a minimum of two proposers.
